The British-American filmmaker changed the superhero landscape with his veristic iteration of the Caped Crusader. Perhaps my favorite Gerwig endeavor was her performance as an actress in Noah Baumbach's Frances Ha, a black-and-white comedy-drama accentuating the life of a twenty-something-year-old whose dreams feel distanced from reality. Greta's sophomore effort, Little Women, was just as delightful, accepting the rather tall task of creating yet another adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's coming-of-age American classic. It's an affectionate recollection of the faces and places that contributed to our formative years, for better or worse. Greta's directorial debut, Lady Bird, was an emotional portrayal of the lower-middle-class experience – highlighting the strongly opinionated relationship between a recalcitrant mother and her self-willed daughter. I've been an admirer of both Greta Gerwig and Christopher Nolan for some time now. Having seen the two back-to-back, the way it was intended, it may not be too far-fetched to call this collocating double-feature one of the best cinematic duets I've ever experienced. Differentiated by tone, these two feature films surprisingly share more in common with one another other than their release date. Part of the gag is that these two films are dissimilar in nature – one a candy-coated introspection of the human condition, the other an existentialist deterioration of morality. This atomic blonde duo, better known as "Barbenheimer," has captured the world's attention, signifying a rare occurrence where two highly anticipated films from well-respected directors release on the same day. Despite popular belief and a strong resemblance, Oscars are not actually closely related to piranhas. Oscars are known to wag their tails and shake their heads at the sight of their human keepers, exactly the same as dogs do.ģ. Oscars are often lovingly referred to as ‘water dogs.’ This is due to their fantastic personalities and the way they interact with humans. The Lutino, Lemon, Yellow, and Zebra are all a result of cross-breeding.Ģ. The Tiger Oscar, Red Oscar, and Albino Oscar are the only naturally occurring varieties. Remember these cute 2” Oscars will grow FAST! Five More Interesting Oscar Factsġ. This is usually something that is reserved to natural specimens only. Considering they are usually purchased at around 1 ½ inch, and the rate at which they grow, this means they could achieve their maximum size within a year.Īs an interesting fact, there have been reports of captive kept Oscars reaching an incredible 14 to 15 inches. The Oscar will do this at a rather fast pace, being capable of at least an inch growth per month. If you manage, and there is no reason why you shouldn’t, to have an Oscar that reaches its full lifespan potential then the chances are that you will also have one that reaches a fair old size. Lin has also advocated for protecting the environment, as shown by one of her most recent pieces, “ Ghost Forest.” This piece is a reflection of her experience witnessing a sea of Atlantic white cedars in the New Jersey Pine Barrens. Throughout her career she has earned numerous awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016 under the Obama administration, for her work related to human rights and environmentalism. Lin seems to approach her work with humility and a sense of gratitude toward her family. “After school, my brother and I would walk over to our father’s studio and spend countless hours watching as our father kneaded the clay, pounding it, pushing it, cutting it through the wire.” Her approach to artmaking often finds its origins in science rather than art, demonstrated in her application of satellite technology and cartographic techniques.“It wasn’t until after my father died that I realized the enormous impact he had on my work,” Lin wrote in a panel underneath her father’s work. In 2019, Lin’s exhibition Flow, organized by the Grand Rapids Art Museum, expanded the site-specificity of her water works to Western Michigan, including The Traces Left Behind (From the Great Bear Lake to the Great Lakes) (2019) a sprawling relief made of recycled silver.įor Lin, the idea of experience, movement, and nature are integral to her work, heightening spatial perception and environmental awareness. ![]() Extending on her investigations of land use and natural bodies of water, Lin created the site-specific work A River Is a Drawing organized with The Hudson River Museum, Yonkers, New York in 2018. The recipient of awards from the National Endowment for the Arts (1988, 2007), Lin was also honored with the National Medal of Arts, conferred by President Barack Obama in 2009, and later the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016, for her significant contributions to art, architecture, and environmental activism. Through her extensive historical and ecological research, Lin’s investigations of bodies of water led her to create the multi-sited and expansive project What Is Missing? (2009–), her final-albeit ongoing-memorial, which serves to raise awareness of environmental degradation and the biodiversity crisis. These wall works, drawings, and large-scale sculptures have been produced using materials including recycled silver, glass marbles, and custom-made stainless-steel pins. Lin’s longstanding environmental advocacy and her fascination with maps led her to begin exploring water as a precious resource in 2007, charting birds-eye views of major bodies of water such as the Hudson, Thames, and Yangtze rivers. It was created for the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and is the first in a series of Wave Field works. ![]() Further engaging with architectural space, The Wave Field (1995), like Lin’s earlier topological production, is comprised of shaped earth, and evokes the dynamics of water. Comprised of mounds of recycled broken safety glass, Groundswell (1993) was created for the artist’s first solo exhibition, Public/Private, held at the Wexner Center for the Arts, Columbus, Ohio, in 1994, and was a response to its surrounding architecture. Informed by Robert Smithson’s earthworks and Richard Serra’s Minimalist sculpture, Lin’s memorial design was recognized with an Honor Award as well as a Henry Bacon Memorial Award from the American Institute of Architects in 1984, the same year she participated in her first group exhibition at Sidney Janis Gallery, New York.Īlongside commissions to design monuments for the Civil Rights Memorial in Montgomery, Alabama (1989), and the Women’s Table for Yale University (1995), Lin pursued her art practice through the creation of site-specific sculpture and earthworks. Lin was thrust into the spotlight after winning a nationwide design competition for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. She went on to study architecture and sculpture at Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut, earning a bachelor’s degree in 1981. Lin’s creative inclinations were encouraged from a young age and she spent much of her childhood in her father’s ceramics studio. Maya Lin critically engages with notions of site and place, exploring the development of systems in order to reflect on the environment, creating objects that invite contemplation-intellectual, sensorial, and physical-of the natural world. ![]() 8/31/2023 0 Comments Square glass horse bookends![]() ![]() Born in Scotland, Kelman must have seen that the business of pressed glass production could be sustained. One of the first intelligence tests, the Binet–Simon test quickly gained support in the psychological community, many of whom further spread it to the public. Wallace Wallin in the December 1911 issue of the journal The Psychological Clinic (volume 5 number 7), public domain Reproduction of an item from the 1908 Binet–Simon intelligence scale, that shows three pairs of pictures, and asks the tested child, "Which of these two faces is the prettier?" Reproduced from the article "A Practical Guide for Administering the Binet–Simon Scale for Measuring Intelligence" by J. Because this testing method merely compares a person's ability to the common ability level of others their age, the general practices of the test can easily be transferred to test different populations, even if the measures used are changed. The children's highest levels of achievement were sorted by age and common levels of achievement considered the normal level for that age. Failing to find a single identifier of intelligence, Binet and Simon instead compared children in each category by age. A wide range of children were tested on a broad spectrum of measures in an effort to discover a clear indicator of intelligence. To create their test, Binet and Simon first created a baseline of intelligence. Binet believed that intelligence is malleable and that intelligence tests would help target children in need of extra attention to advance their intelligence. Due to changing education laws of the time, Binet had been requested by a government commission to come up with a way to detect children who were falling behind developmentally and in need of help. The Binet–Simon scale was created by the French psychologist Alfred Binet and his student Theodore Simon. In 1916, at Stanford University, the psychologist Lewis Terman released a revised examination that became known as the Stanford–Binet test.Īs discussed by Fancher & Rutherford in 2012, the Stanford–Binet is a modified version of the Binet–Simon Intelligence scale. As Binet indicated, case studies might be more detailed and helpful, but the time required to test many people would be excessive. ![]() It was initially created by the French psychologist Alfred Binet, who, following the introduction of a law mandating universal education by the French government, began developing a method of identifying "slow" children, so that they could be placed in special education programs, instead of labelled sick and sent to the asylum. The test originated in France, then was revised in the United States. The development of the Stanford–Binet initiated the modern field of intelligence testing and was one of the first examples of an adaptive test. The five factors being tested are knowledge, quantitative reasoning, visual-spatial processing, working memory, and fluid reasoning. The test measures five weighted factors and consists of both verbal and nonverbal subtests. It is a cognitive-ability and intelligence test that is used to diagnose developmental or intellectual deficiencies in young children, in contrast to the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS). It is now in its fifth edition (SB5), which was released in 2003. The Stanford–Binet Intelligence Scales (or more commonly the Stanford–Binet) is an individually administered intelligence test that was revised from the original Binet–Simon Scale by Alfred Binet and Théodore Simon.
